Japanese woman sues Google over panty pics on StreetView

I actually think that the woman is right in defending her right to a privacy, no matter how outrageous it may look.

This happened in the district of Fukuoka as a woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, claimed her obsessive-compulsive disorder worsened and she feared everything she did throughout the day was secretly recorded after Google Street View captured images of her underwear hanging out to dry. She sued the search giant for $7,000 and won the case.

"I could understand if it was just a picture of the outside of the apartment, but showing a person's underwear hanging outside is absolutely wrong," the unnamed woman told the district court of Fukuoka, Japan, where she filed her case in October. Google reportedly removed the image around the same time.

Google Street View, another internet menace to privacy?
Google Street View provides 360-degree street-level images of locations in more than a dozen countries, recorded by cars equipped with 9-lens panoramic cameras. The woman filing the suit reportedly looked up her address online last spring and saw her intimate apparel hanging out for the whole wired world to see.

"I was overwhelmed with anxiety that I might be the target of a sex crime," she said. "It caused me to lose my job and I had to change my residence."

It's unclear whether the plaintiff knew her underthings were viewable from the street (thus captured by the Street View car) before she Googled her address. Stories of odd Street View lookups are becoming increasingly common as Street View extends its search —though most are not traumatic.

Well, I know of someone who would support Google StreetView for his 'investigation and data gathering' purposes:

New Ring ni Kakero anime premieres on April 2011

It's great to hear that Masami Kurumada's works are still making it into this media. Despite being known mostly for Saint Seiya, this author should be recognized also for B'tX and Ring ni Kakero.

Ring ni Kakero is a classic boxing anime series, whose protagonist is eerily similar to Seiya, Ryuji Takane, a young boy who looks to enter in the world junior boxing championship. But's it a story that has the trademark inspirational theme of this author.

Toei Animation company just launched a website for Ring ni Kakero 1: Sekai Taikai-hen, and it will premiere next April on Japan's Animax channel.

As a sidenote, series script supervisor Yousuke Kuroda, character designers Michi Himeno and Shingo Araki, and musical composer Susumu Ueda are reprising their respective roles from the previous anime series. However, Hiroshi Ikehata is the new director, and Keiichi Ichikawa is co-designing the characters in addition the overseeing to animation process.

Aa! Megami-sama OAD trailer available!

The DVD containing the series will come out along the limited edition copies of the 42nd volume of this classic story by Kousuke Fujishima.

New Supernatural anime trailer

This may come out a bit late for you, but there's a new 222-second trailer in the official site of the anime. The highly anticipated 22-episode series will come out on February of next year on DVD and Blu-ray (the first part).

Here it is in HD quality!

Tite Kubo: “I’ll Keep Bleach Going For At Least 10 Years”

There it is, from the man himself.

According to Sankakucomplex's site, "Bleach’s author Tite Kubo is apparently set on keeping Bleach going for at least another 10 years, remarking that it is only halfway through.

Kubo’s remarks were reported by 2ch-frequenting attendees of the recently held Jump Festa, where he took the stage to talk about his creation:
“It’s about halfway through the story at the moment.
[...]
At the very least, I’ll be doing it for another 10 years.”

Another version has him being asked “So will you be keeping it going for the next 30 years?” to which he responds “I think I’d like to make it a bit shorter than that,” with the other speaker quipping that “It should be continuing for at least another 10 years!”

Both accounts agree on him saying he is about half done however, which for a 10-year-old title would rather suggest another 10 years to go.

Reactions to all this are mixed to say the least, ranging from enthused to horrified…"

Well.... O_O as long as it doesn't become Dragon Ball GT, I don't know what to think right now, really.

I have missed a lot, haven't I? Ao no Exorcist trailer

The first thing I knew when I got back my internet connection was the news that there's already a preview trailer for Ao no Exorcist's anime, available on the official site!

The series is set to premiere on April of 2011, almost the same time the manga will get licensed by Viz Media for distribution in the U.S.

Somehow I wish it was Bleach-level of epic, but let's see.

According to Moon Phase, Anime production studio P.A. Works released a full two-minute trailer in their official site for its 10th anniversary production Hanasaku Iroha. The trailer is the first to include animation footage from the new anime.

Brief Hiatus

I'm moving to another apartment and the installation of the Internet service will take a while, so I'm going on hiatus for almost a week.

I will try to keep the blog updated, though, if I find a cybercafe or business center nearby.

Norageki promo streamed! Premiere set on January 22, 2011

Bandai visual launched a new 30 second promotional trailer of this OAV about four prisoners and a cat, in which a sudden power outage opens the locks and everyone is mysteriously set free from their cells. However, all of the guards are missing, and the prisoners cannot find any exits.

The trailer for the OAV can be found here

For being a one-shot, it is quite a big project done by the animators at Sunrise studios, with Hiroaki Ando (Digital Juice, Steamboy & Tekkonkinkreet CGI director) directing, writer Dai Sato (Freedom, Eureka Seven), Masaru Gotsubo (Shounen Tantei Inugami Geru, Samurai Champloo manga) and Kimitoshi Yamane (Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop), who is responsible for the character and mechanic designs.

The premiere will be in theatrical screenings on January 22, 2011.

The author of Love Hina announced at a press conference this Monday  that the Japanese publishers Shueisha and Kodansha are collaborating with his manga distribution site, J-Comi.

J-Comi just launched as a beta version at the end of November with the release of Love Hina series on the 26th and so far it has registered more than 1.7 million downloads as of last Friday.

Akamatsu said at a press conference last Monday that "manga is an exportable resource. I think the ad-supported distribution of manga is the only way to counter illegal distribution."

More details and guidelines on the YenPress manga talent search

I've been doing too much errands lately and I can't believe that I haven't started yet, despite already having a 'neemu' (draft).

Yenpress stated that this is not a 'contest' per se, there's no winner, and that they can offer as many contracts as they wish but they can also decide to not offer anything to anyone if they don't deem that the quality of the stories and art is not good enough.

They had quite a conflict in making the sizes of the sheet clear, but now they attached a sheet in their site. You can click on it to download or go at theit site here.

Also, Yenpress indicated more guidelines to clear the doubts and questions:

In response to the questions asked so far:

-Dimensions : As mentioned above, as long as the proportions are maintained, the size of the paper you use does not really matter. The proportions don’t have to be exact, as long as it’s close.
-32 pages : We really prefer you make your story exactly 32 pages, but we won’t make a fuss if you are +/- 2 pages.
-Self-published or web comic experiences are allowed.
 -Teamwork also allowed.
-It has to read left to right. American Style, not Japanese style, remember this.

-On the title page, include your title/name. The logo doesn’t have to be fancy, and the title page doesn’t necessarily have to be a full page of art. If you can find a way to make it part of your story, that’s also fine.
-You don’t have to be in the States to enter.
-There’s no age limit, but if you are under 18 and we like your work, a parent or a guardian will need to sign any contracts or other paperwork.
-We do not seek copyrights for creator-submitted work. Anything submitted will remain the sole copyright of the creator. If we are interested in your submission, we will provide you with a contract outlining our terms.
-Nothing has to be digitally done. You can work with a pen and paper and scan/photocopy them to send to us. We do not want to receive anything via email, that’s it.
-At the end of the day, the instructions are more like a guideline for those you have no idea where to start. If you already know how to do the pages, use your best judgment to show your ability. To stress it again, this is not a CONTEST, so there are no “winners” per se. If we find many submissions that strike our fancy, we might offer multiple contracts, but at the same time, there’s no guarantee that any contracts will be offered. -It all depends on the quality of the submissions we receive. Please note that we are looking for PROFESSIONAL-level work.
Thank you!

Allright folks, let's do our best!

UPDATE: Thanks to user Loominate from Deviantart, who provided a sheet that can be of help for those who still are having trouble in adjusting the pages, it's in Photoshop format. You can use it as a separate or template layer, so you can adjust the page that matches exactly its dimensions.

Here's the link:

Weekly Review: Karakuridoji Ultimo manga

Commonly known as Ultimo, it's a story by Hiroyuki Takei and Stan Lee. It began to be serialized in 2009 in Jump Square magazine.

It was originally thought that the story wouldn't have much success since colaborations between Japanese authors and American authors never turned out well because of the differences in style. As we know, Western comics tend to exaggerate everything, the muscles, the looks of the characters, the plots are too simple, whereas manga displays characters with the stylized look we are used to and there's always an emphasis in a solid plot that has nothing to envy to academic novels.

But Ultimo is definitely the exception to this rule. If you wanted to read a good old-school Marvel-type story without compromising the proper Japanese manga style, this is it.

Stan Lee's signature is all over this manga in terms of story. He gets to the basics: there always must be a conflict between good and evil, but what can be deemed 'good' and what can be deemed 'evil'?

We find out with the story of Yamato Agari, a 16 year old high school student who just wants to get by on his life and buy his girlfriend Sayama-san a present for her birthday.

Until he goes to an antique shop and when he sees a mysterious ancient doll (doji) from the 12th century, he suddenly begins to remember everything about his previous life as a samurai bandit, and how he met this doll that turns into a super battle robot that represents Ultimate Good and has the ability to twist time at the will of its master.

The robot was created by an old man called 'Dunstan', presumably a space-time traveller criminal from the 30th century who created all these machines so he could have the ultimate conflict between 'good' and 'evil'.

So there you have it, Stan Lee's persona was shoehorned in the story and it wasn't a bad idea after all. He's the supreme author experimenting with all the concepts.

The story is really fascinating but there's still a lot to reveal about the characters. I read all the way through chapter 16 and couldn't get enough.

Ore-sama Kingdom and Hime Gal Paradise will get anime DVD

Shogakugan's Ciao Shojo magazine has announced in its latest edition that these two series will be bundled into an anime DVD.

Ore-sama Kingdom is the story of a shōjo manga creator who is still in school, her name is Nono Nonohara, ans she is a young manga artist who just enrolled in a new high school. She finds herself surrounded by a group of three "super-cute" guys.

Whereas Hime Gal Paradise follows Himeko Tachikawa, a quiet girl who goes to the all-female Chō Shibuya High School. A stunningly beautiful "Hime Gal" boy named Tochiotome Mikami transfers into her class, and he transforms Himeko into a cute girl as well. Wao launched Hime Gal Paradise last year, and the second compiled book volume shipped this past July. The anime adapts the story of how Himeko and Tochiotome met.

Well, if you wanted your double dose of pure bishonen guys, this is it :-)

Gintama anime will return!

Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will announce next Monday that the Gintama anime will return this month next year.

The anime had ended in March, but Shinji Takamatsu, one of the main directors of the anime, had said at an event later that month that "Gintama is absolutely not over. It hasn't even begun yet! It will definitely return."

The story of Gintama takes place in Edo (known today as Tokyo because of its name change in 1868), Japan, which was conquered by aliens called Amanto in the late Edo period. The samurai of Japan fought the aliens, but after their defeat the Amanto placed a ban on carrying swords in public. The plot is focused on an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata who helps a teenager named Shinpachi Shimura save his sister Tae from a group of aliens who want to make her part of a brothel.

Blue Exorcist will get an anime!!!! Finally!!!!!

This series by Kazue Kato, also known as Ao no Exorcist for manga readers, will have an anime adaptation for next year, while the manga will be licensed by Viz Media to come out in April for North America.

This was announced by the official site of Shueisha's Jump Square Magazine, which just uploaded the January cover of the magazine with this great news.

As we know, this is the story of Rin Okumura, a boy raised by a famous exorcist named Father Fujimoto. After an argument between the two, Rin discovers he is the son of Satan.

OMG!!!!! I'm excited!!!! I knew that this would happen sooner or later with the success that this series is having!!!!!

*hyperventilates then passes away*

Databook: Yamato Agari from Karakuridouji Ultimo

Write this phrase in a wall and memorize it with me: 'This is the next Kurosaki Ichigo', in terms of badassness and prettiness when this manga gets done into an anime.

It's quite a mystery right now, but sometimes I swear that every character in this manga secretly wants to get in his pants (and Ultimo's too.)

And with these looks it's no freaking wonder:

Yamato Agari is originally presented in the manga as an idealist 12th century bandit swordsman who reunited an army of his own to defeat the oppressing Japanese nobility once and for all, and start a new government ruled by the people themselves.

Interestingly enough, not really much is known about him except for the fact that he reincarnated in todays 21st century as a 16-year old high school student (as well as his comrades), until he finds a certain doll in an antique shop and he feels a strange connection with him.

Ultimo (a super robot representing Ultimate 'Good') awakens to the presence of its master and embraces him, despite him not having a clue as for why.

Yamato is the master of this douji who has the ability to control time and dimensions, and it's the most powerful of its kind. Precisely because of that absolute power is that everyone wants to get a hold of it, and it's believed that it's actually the cause for the future destruction of the world as we know it, because of the expected ultimate clash with the douji (robot) of absolute evil, Vice.

Yamato's challenge is to figure out a way to stop this cataclysmic event from happening and capture Dunstan, a scientific genius criminal (sought after by the Guardians of time), who created all these robots of Good and Evil just for his amusement.

And at the same time, Yamato finds himself just wanting a normal life with his high school sweetheart, Makoto Sayama.

It's good to note that Yamato is drawn as a 'man among men', and much taller than his classmates, he has this classic 'Samurai hero' look and always displays a noble attitude, despite being bad-tempered.

Weekly review: Bakuman anime

I've started noticing it lately but there are some quite subtle differences between the anime and its manga. Don't get me wrong, the Bakuman anime is great and all episodes so far have been handled very well, it has great pacing, the animation team knows how to build momentum, and the quality can't be better.

In the manga's art, you can see the 'nasty' looks the main characters have, as the signature style of the creators of Death Note
But I feel that the anime is more targeted to female? audiences, making too much emphasis on the romantic theme and the comedic moments.

The manga definitely makes more emphasis on the 'wanting to be a mangaka no matter what' story. And of course this was a decision of the studio that I'm not going to criticize much.

While the anime softens up a bit, and shows us cute protagonists with a dream

Bakuman is the story of two high school students who, against all odds of choosing a 'normal, successful' office career, decide to become mangakas at their own risk of failing. Slowly we see how they struggle but also how they will achieve their objectives: to have their first story published in Shonen Jack (lol!) before graduating.

Saiko being handed over the keys of his uncle's studio
Moritaka Mashiro (Saiko) is the typical student who doesn't know what to really do with his life, he's really good at drawing but he's undecided whether he wants to take his uncle's steps. He has had this crush on Miho since he was a little kid, but never dared to confess until he achieved something truly important in his life that would make him worthy of her.

He meets Takito Akagi (Shuujin) because he discovered through his notebook drawings that he left in the classroom that he has a crush on her. In exchange for not telling anyone, Shujin offers him to team up to create manga. Shujin is the number 1 student at his school, and basically has the world laid out before him, because he can choose where to go to prepare for a prestigious college, thus land a first-rate job, etc.

But interestingly enough, Shujin doesn't want that, despite his talents as a writer and the fact that he could become a traditional novelist. He chooses to work with Saiko because he believes in him and the work they can achieve together, thus he's a key piece in Saiko wanting to become a mangaka.

Shujin has a creepy, explosive temper when provoked, despite being a nerd
As you can see, this series has great characters with depth and I find that it's a refreshing break from all the fight-to-death style anime/manga we are used to see. Sometimes a good slice-of-life story is a nice change of pace, even for the creators of Death Note :)

This week's featured AMV (21)

Following with the Aizen theme, I couldn't help but showcase this badass video with new footage from the movies and the games. Looks awesome in high quality, isn't it? If we only could get this quality from every episode but I guess nobody is perfect.

The 2011 anime calendars are available at CdJapan!

As the end of the year approaches there's already plenty of 2011 calendars available of your favorite anime and manga series. What better way to start the new year with great visuals decorating the walls of your room or studio to get inspired!

For example, we've got this Bakuman one!

There are two versions of the Bleach 2011 calendar with top-notch images:

And this is just the beginning!

Is Aizen a lame villain?

After reading the 'Ask John' segment at Animenation, I wonder how Captain Aizen from Bleach really fares in comparison to the villains that John showcases.

The problem I see with Aizen is that he's so ridiculously powerful, God-like and distant that it was only recently in the manga that we started to know what his true motivations were. At least with Light Yagami from Death Note we could see how he thought and how he strived to create the perfect world from the very beginning.

He's charismatic and bishounen, which makes him attractive and palatable. Plus, the scene where he goes 'Superman' on the entire Soul Society after obtaining the Hogyoku is priceless.

He spent all those years playing the 'nerd' captain, the tender, calm and spiritual one, just to find out that it was an illusion from his zanpakuto, Kyoka no Suigetsu, able to achieve total and complete hypnosis.

Not to forget how he stopped Ichigo's bankai with a finger, and the whole groupie relationship with Hinamori is just sadistic.

But overall, he has a sorta pimp personality (only rivaled with Grimmjow) that is reminiscent of those nostalgia villains from the 80's, just with a more suave touch.

Store special: HP Pavilion dv6-3120us review

The HP Pavillion dv6-3120us
In my continuous search  for the perfect, not-that-expensive laptop for the end of 2010, I find that there are quite a few models that are worth it in terms of price and what it offers.

I have been always skeptic of AMD processors, as I've had desktop models myself with that processor that wasn't quite as efficient as Athlon or Intel.

But I was pleasantly surprised with the AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile Processor, they have certainly come a long way, the way it can be expandable to 8GB RAM and 2.6 Ghz makes it compete with the new i5 Intel processors and not stay out of the run.

When I first saw the design of this laptop, I imagined a 'pretty' design like Dell and at the same time it doesn't have anything to envy to a Macbook. This model is good for games and entertainment in general, but after trying it, it's perfect for work use, especially if you work in the Graphic Design or Animation field.

It took me a while to get used to the keyboard and the touchpad because they went overboard with the sensitivity, but if it annoys you, you can always go to the Control Panel and customize it as you wish.

It comes with Windows 7 64-bit premium so it supports the Adobe CS5 programs with ease. Another great thing is that it has 4 USB ports!  An additional HDMI and a VGA port enables you to integrate it with your digital camera and it doesn't even work a sweat as the data transfer rates run smoothly.

Some could still say that a 500 GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM can be relatively modest for a high-performance computer that should serve well for design purposes, but guess what; if you look for something wayyy less expensive than a Macbook but that encompasses its main qualities, this is it.

Even the price is similar to affordable Dell laptops at $529 on Amazon with free shipping.

A beta version of the site will be launched on this friday November 26, starting with the 14 volumes of Akamatsu’s Love Hina manga. The site will formally launch on January 10, 2011.

This spinoff, called Dragon Ball SD, will start to be serialized next month in the new Super Strong Jump Magazine by Shueisha, along with a Rock Lee spinoff from Naruto, a Chopperman spinoff from One Piece, and more stories based on popular characters from Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and Toriko.
